I’ve always loved to read. One of my favorite memories is sitting on the floor of my parents den with all the Encyclopedia Britannica books spread around me, devouring them one or two at a time. It was rare that I didn’t have a book with me, even if it was only a dictionary. By the time I was thirteen I’d gone through hundreds of books, and many of the classics. My library cards were golden tickets and I treasured each and every one they issued to me. I have a tendency to lose things, especially the important things in my life. Library cards were no exception.

My biggest dream in life has always been to write and publish a novel. I’ve written poems and short stories, but tackling a novel is not something I’ve ever felt prepared for. There were a few failed attempts, usually after reading a “How to Write a Novel” book, but nothing ever serious came from it. I just figured I would have time, perhaps when I retired.

Last October I came to the conclusion that I could dream about it or I could do it. Who knows how much time we have? If I found myself in a hospital bed, one of my biggest regrets would be to leave this world without leaving part of my soul here. My intention is to leave as much of myself here as I can. Children are great, and I love them dearly. But, that’s all DNA, and hard as you might try, they will never be you. My stories are me.

And besides, I want to see my name in print.
